Since its conception in the 2000s BoardGameGeek has been the digital home of all things board games related to a huge community of gamers all around the world and this week it welcomed its 4,000,000 user.
Co-creator of BoardGameGeek, Scott Alden wrote, “As our community continues to grow, we remain committed to our mission: supporting and celebrating the hobby we all love.”
History of BoardGameGeek
BoardGameGeek launched in January 2000, after co-creator Scott Alden, who was a video game developer at the time, discovered games such as Magic: The Gathering, Warhammer, Settlers of Catan however most important Tigris & Euphrates.
Using the core of another database, 3DGameGeek, BoardGameGeek was created initially as a database to showcase game summaries and session reports by a small collection of 200 initial users.
Since 2005, BoardGameGeek has continued to grow as Scott decided to take maintaining the site full time, throughout this season of growth Scott added ratings, forums, images, video and files, users were even able to add their own digital collections as well as start earning GeekGold from the images and files they uploaded.
It was also around this time that BGG. CON also launched, growing in strength since, as well as the addition of the BoardGameGeek store.
In 2010, the site also received the Diana Jones Award, recognising it as a ‘resource without peer for board and card gamers, the recognition of this online community.”
In 2019, under much adversity the website rebrand replacing the 90s mascot logo with a more modern silhouette version of Ernie, more akin to the modernisation of logo design in recent years.
Following hitting the 4 million mark, Scott added, “We have exciting plans for new features, improved functionality that will make BGG even better.”
